The Partit Nazzjonalista has welcomed the Government’s recent decision to introduce underground waste bins in several locations across Malta, describing it as a clear adoption of an Opposition proposal.

Eve Borg Bonello, Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Public Cleanliness, explained that the proposal had originally been outlined in the party’s consultation document “Innaddfu lil Malta”, published in August 2025.

The document presented a detailed vision aimed at improving quality of life through better waste management, cleaner surroundings and more modern infrastructure, following extensive research and public consultation.

At the time, the Government had not taken up the proposal and had expressed concerns about its feasibility. However, recent announcements confirm that underground waste containers will now be installed in ten locations, a move the Partit Nazzjonalista says will benefit both residents and visitors.

Borg Bonello noted that this measure forms part of a wider set of proposals included in the document.

These include increasing waste collection frequency through improved systems, introducing electric waste fleets, using smart technology to optimise collection routes, and strengthening enforcement of existing regulations, particularly in relation to construction waste.

The document also highlights the need for tailored solutions in areas such as beaches, marinas and rural zones.
