GOVERNMENT TARGETS 25% OF TOTAL ENERGY FROM RENEWABLES BY 2030

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced an ambitious plan for Malta to generate 25% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, as part of a wider 25-year strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s energy independence.
The long-term strategy focuses on reducing reliance on imported oil and gas, while tapping into Malta’s natural potential in solar, wind, and marine energy. The Prime Minister described the plan as a clear signal of the government’s vision to build a more resilient country and safeguard future generations. He also highlighted Malta’s potential to serve as a link for energy transmission between Europe and Africa.
Speaking during Freedom Day commemorations in Birgu, Robert Abela noted the significant progress already made. In 2012, less than 3% of Malta’s energy came from renewable sources, while by 2024 this figure had risen to over 17%.
Beyond energy, the Prime Minister emphasised the government’s broader political agenda, including continued economic growth, job creation, and social progress. He pointed to Malta’s strong economic performance in recent years, with record levels of employment and sustained expansion.
He also confirmed that Parliament will soon debate new legislation, including the creation of a National Human Rights and Equality Commission, as well as laws aimed at strengthening the autonomy of persons with disabilities.
Framing these initiatives within the wider context of Freedom Day, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of building on past achievements. He reiterated the Labour Government’s commitment to ensuring that Malta’s progress in energy, the economy, and social rights continues to benefit future generations.
