Government Steps In To Pay Aviation Cosmetics Employees After Closure

Economy Minister Silvio Schembri has said that workers formerly employed by Aviation Cosmetics have now been paid what they were owed, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty.
The issue arose after the company was forced to shut down operations when a court ordered it to vacate its premises.
In a video statement, Schembri explained that the firm, which had around 60 employees, had been experiencing financial problems for a prolonged period before collapsing due to significant debts to private creditors.
He stressed that, as a privately run company, its difficulties were not the direct responsibility of the Government. However, he said intervention was necessary to prevent workers from being left without support.
At one stage, more than 50 employees had not received their February salaries, with some going unpaid since January.
This situation placed considerable strain on workers trying to manage everyday costs and financial obligations. Schembri said the Government chose to step in rather than allow the situation to worsen.
He noted that coordination with Malta Enterprise helped ensure that all outstanding wages were eventually paid. With this issue resolved, attention has shifted to the future of those affected.
Schembri said efforts are under way to bring a new operator in the aviation sector to Malta, with the intention of preserving jobs and retaining skilled workers.
He added that discussions are ongoing and urged patience while a more stable long term solution is pursued.
