Government Launches Public Consultation On Social Media Reform To Protect Children Online

The Government has officially launched a public consultation on a proposed reform designed to better protect children and vulnerable individuals from the potential harms of social media, with the first consultation meeting taking place yesterday.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders involved in child protection within the Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, along with the technical committee tasked with developing the reform.
Participants largely agreed on the urgent need for practical and effective measures to address online risks.
The discussion was led by Minister Michael Falzon and Parliamentary Secretary Rebecca Buttigieg and focused on the everyday social challenges faced by authorities, as well as how the reform can introduce stronger protective mechanisms.
It was also agreed that the reform should maintain a careful balance and avoid restricting modern forms of communication.
Minister Falzon explained that the reform seeks to strengthen safeguards against harmful online content, complementing existing laws that criminalise cyberbullying, cyberstalking and fake online profiles.
Parliamentary Secretary Buttigieg emphasised the complexity of the issue and the importance of informed, decisive action.
Members of the public can submit their views on the green paper through publicconsultation.gov.mt until 27 February, while two community meetings will also be held as part of the consultation process.
