Government Launches First National Long-Term Training Programme For Local Councils

The Government has launched its first structured, long-term national training programme for people working in Malta’s Local Government sector, alongside an EU co-financed investment of over €600,000 in professional development opportunities.
The initiative was announced during a conference attended by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, as well as mayors and executive secretaries from councils across Malta and Gozo.
The programme aims to strengthen the skills and capabilities of mayors, councillors, council employees, association staff and officials within the Local Government Division through training opportunities in Malta and abroad, as well as online courses.
The strategy was developed following a comprehensive assessment of the sector’s needs, supported by the Council of Europe and MCAST.
The investment forms part of the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) project, which had already provided direct assistance to nearly 100 people by August, with funding approaching €200,000.
The Government said the initiative is intended to improve the quality of services provided to local communities.
