Government Has Lost Control Of Security In Our Communities, Says PN

The Partit Nazzjonalista has accused the Labour Government of failing to guarantee security in Malta, arguing that communities are being left without an adequate Police presence while drug-related crime continues to rise.
The statements were made during a press conference addressed by PN candidates Beppe Fenech Adami, Edmond Cuschieri and Frank Anthony Tabone, following proposals announced by PN Leader Alex Borg aimed at giving what the party described as a “Fresh Start” to security in Malta and Gozo.
Beppe Fenech Adami said the Government had spent years promising stronger security, greater respect for disciplined forces and better investment in essential services, yet people were instead finding closed police stations, overstretched forces and officers leaving the service.
He stressed that police officers, soldiers, Civil Protection officers and prison officers deserved improved wages and conditions, together with stronger support and recognition for their work.
Among the PN’s proposals are salary improvements, pension reforms for disciplined forces, annual pension reviews linked to current salaries, cost-of-living adjustments for retired members, and schemes aimed at encouraging former officers to return to service.
Edmond Cuschieri focused on the need for police stations to once again become central within local communities. He argued that Community Policing should strengthen existing services rather than replace police stations altogether, warning that many residents struggle to travel to other localities simply to file a report or seek assistance. The PN is proposing the reopening and modernisation of police stations across Malta and Gozo.
Frank Anthony Tabone highlighted figures from the 2026 Annual Crime Review, which showed a significant increase in drug-related offences during 2025, including rises in trafficking, possession and importation cases. He argued that the figures demonstrated the growing impact of drugs on communities and families.
The PN also pledged investment in stronger enforcement against organised crime, advanced technology at ports, and improved prevention and rehabilitation programmes, while committing to greater investment in the Armed Forces of Malta, including cyber security, emergency response and search and rescue capabilities.
