The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting voluntary organisations, announcing that land will be allocated to Second Chance Horse Rescue to enhance its work in rehabilitating and rehoming horses.

As the Ministry responsible for Animal Welfare emphasised, the invaluable contributions of volunteers and NGOs are vital in giving a voice to the voiceless and offering vulnerable animals a second chance at life.

Second Chance Horse Rescue, led by Alistair, a young man who has devoted his life to saving horses, has already transformed the lives of many animals both in Malta and abroad. Together with a dedicated team of volunteers, Alistair provides shelter, rehabilitation, and the hope of permanent, loving homes for rescued horses.

The allocation of land will allow the organisation to establish its own base of operations, ensuring safe accommodation for horses throughout their rehabilitation period.

Government representatives described this step as a recognition of the compassion, responsibility, and perseverance shown by voluntary groups.

“This initiative highlights the values that strengthen our society and inspire us all,” the Ministry stated, reaffirming its support for those who dedicate their passion and time to sustaining the spirit of volunteering.

In a FaceBook post, Anton Refalo, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, announced the news in the light of Animal Day.

In addition to this, The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights hosted two key events; the Animal Honours Awards on Friday, 3 October, and the Festa Annimali on Saturday, 4 October, at Ta’ Qali.

Both initiatives celebrated the Government’s ongoing commitment to animal protection and welfare.

The Animal Honours Awards recognised the dedication of volunteers, professionals, and organisations working tirelessly for animal rights, while Festa Annimali brought families together for workshops, animal shows, educational stands, and children’s activities promoting responsible pet care.

Minister Anton Refalo, and Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, praised the participants’ efforts, highlighting how these events raise awareness, encourage adoption, and foster a culture of compassion and respect toward animals in Malta.
