Government Doubles Grant For Vacant Properties Rehabilitation

The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Accommodation, Andy Ellul, has announced that the grant for the rehabilitation of vacant properties will double to €50,000 from this year. The scheme applies to properties that, once restored, are added to the Accommodation Authority’s inventory for social accommodation.
Ellul also confirmed changes to the eligibility criteria. Previously, properties had to be at least 30 years old to qualify. This threshold has now been reduced to 20 years, widening access to the scheme and allowing more owners to apply.
The Rehabilitation of Vacant Dwellings for Rent Scheme supports individuals whose properties have been vacant for more than a year. Through the grant, owners may carry out structural repairs, refurbishment or other necessary works. Once completed, the property enters the ‘Nikru biex Nassistu’ scheme and is leased to the Accommodation Authority. Applicants previously received up to €25,000, but the maximum grant has now increased to €50,000.
Speaking in Ħal Għaxaq, Ellul said the measure provides stability for owners through a ten year lease and a steady income, while ensuring secure and dignified housing for those most in need. Accommodation Authority Chief Executive Matthew Zerafa said the scheme also assists elderly owners and families facing high restoration costs.
