Government Agrees With Opposition On Maltese language Courses For Foreign Workers, Says PN

The Nationalist Party said that the Government had effectively adopted a proposal it had first put forward more than two years earlier regarding Maltese language and culture requirements for foreign workers renewing their contracts.

The PN claimed that the measures being introduced at the time mirrored a policy it had already advanced around two and a half years before, arguing that the Government had recognised the need for such steps and had aligned itself with the Opposition’s earlier position.

The Opposition stated that under the new approach, non-EU workers seeking to renew their employment in Malta would have been required to complete a course in Maltese language and culture.

The PN added that these workers would also have been expected to sit for an examination and pass it in order to qualify for a longer-term employment contract upon renewal.

The party said that if the Government had acted on its earlier proposals when they were first presented in October 2023, Maltese and Gozitan citizens would already have been benefiting from such a system. It argued that the delay reflected poor decision making and a lack of timely action.

The Opposition further stated that it supported forward-looking and proactive policymaking, and described the development as confirmation that its approach was practical and effective.

The PN claimed that the Government had effectively implemented ideas it had previously put forward to address issues related to population growth and workforce integration.

The statement concluded that the development demonstrated its readiness to govern, saying that it did not procrastinate but instead delivered policies that it believed served the long-term interests of the country.
