Government Accuses Alex Borg Of Undermining Daphne Murder Investigation

The Government has criticised Opposition Leader Alex Borg over remarks suggesting there had been shortcomings and flaws in the investigations into the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, describing his comments as irresponsible and politically motivated.

In a statement, the Government said Borg had once again failed to rise above partisan politics at what it described as a sensitive moment.

It argued that his comments not only cast doubt on the work carried out by the Malta Police Force but also undermined the contribution of international experts who assisted the investigation.

The Government noted that specialists from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Dutch forensic experts were brought in immediately after the assassination to provide technical assistance.

It said their expertise, combined with the work of the Maltese authorities, formed part of the investigative process that eventually led to the conviction and lengthy prison sentences of five individuals.

According to the Government, the Opposition had ignored repeated calls for prudence and responsibility, instead choosing to question the investigations conducted by both local police and foreign experts.

It also accused the Opposition of continuing to resort to partisan attacks and using insulting and disparaging language towards individuals leading important national institutions.

The statement added that Alex Borg had yet to distance himself from such comments, arguing that this further reflected a lack of responsibility.

The Government maintained that respect for the rule of law does not involve making political statements without considering their consequences.

Instead, it said supporting justice means standing firmly behind the country's institutions and giving them the backing needed to continue carrying out their duties in the interests of Malta and the pursuit of justice.
