GOLDEN BAY SAND DUNES SHOW REMARKABLE RECOVERY THANKS TO RESTORATION EFFORTS

The sand dunes at Golden Bay are showing significant signs of recovery following years of dedicated restoration work, highlighting the importance of protecting one of Malta’s rarest natural habitats.
Sand dunes, known locally as l-għaram tar-ramel, are a scarce feature in Malta and play a crucial role in maintaining the stability of sandy beaches. Acting as natural barriers, they help prevent erosion and support local biodiversity.
Over the past decade, restoration efforts have led to visible improvements, with healthier dunes now forming at Golden Bay. Much of this work has been carried out by Heritage Parks Malta as part of ongoing conservation initiatives within Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park.
Efforts have included the introduction of native plants in collaboration with the Environment and Resources Authority, as well as enforcement measures to protect the area. Rangers and community policing teams from the Malta Police Force have worked together to ensure that regulations are respected, particularly restrictions preventing people from walking on the dunes.
Conservationists stress that public cooperation has been key to the project’s success. By respecting signage and protected zones, visitors have helped allow nature the space it needs to regenerate.
The recovery of Golden Bay’s dunes serves as a clear example of how coordinated efforts between NGOs, authorities, and the public can lead to positive environmental outcomes, reinforcing the message that without dunes, beaches themselves are at risk.
