Gale Force Winds To Calm Significantly Later Today, Says MET Office
Local

Gale force winds affecting the Maltese Islands are expected to ease later this afternoon, the MET Office has reported.

From around 6.00 pm, wind speeds are forecast to decrease rapidly, becoming moderate by approximately 9.00 pm. Winds will continue veering to the west southwest and are expected to remain moderate to rather strong during the evening.

At present, weather depression Harry is centred over the Gulf of Gabes and is forecast to track northwards throughout the day, passing over northern Tunisia. This movement is expected to lead to a further reduction in wind strength, particularly during the night.

As a result of improving conditions, the red weather warning, the highest level issued, has been downgraded to an orange weather warning.

Despite this change, the public is still strongly advised to avoid coastal areas and other locations most exposed to strong winds. The warning remains in force until 8.00 pm this evening and may be extended if conditions require it.

In addition to strong winds, today’s weather is expected to remain predominantly cloudy, with periods of rain and suspended dust affecting air quality.

Stay safe!
