Għaxaq’s Ġnien 2000 is currently undergoing significant improvement and regeneration works as part of a wider investment aimed at transforming the public space into a more modern, accessible and welcoming area for the local community.

During a recent site visit, the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, joined Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall and other members of the Local Council to inspect progress on the ongoing works.

The visit highlighted the collaborative effort between national and local authorities in upgrading public infrastructure for residents.

One of the main interventions in the project involves the removal of the existing central structure. This change is intended to open up the space, improve accessibility and make the garden more functional for everyday use by residents and the Local Council.

The surrounding area is also being upgraded with new paving, which will enhance both the appearance and usability of the entire site.

The project is being implemented by the Public Works Department and includes broader infrastructure improvements.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli stated that the regeneration of Ġnien 2000 reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to investing in high quality public spaces that improve the quality of life of residents.

She emphasised that such projects demonstrate in a practical way the Government’s dedication to supporting local communities.

She also noted that every locality should have access to well designed public spaces where families, children and older people can gather safely and comfortably.

According to her, the investment in Għaxaq is another example of how priority continues to be given to the needs of Local Councils and their communities.

Mayor Karl Boxall said that once completed, the project will deliver a more attractive, accessible and functional space that will enhance the urban environment and benefit both the council and residents, particularly those living nearby.

He added that the redesign has been carefully planned to improve movement, visibility and overall accessibility within the garden.

The upgraded site will also feature new benches, energy efficient lighting, CCTV systems and additional greenery, all of which are intended to create a safer, more comfortable and more inviting public space.
