Għar Lapis Regeneration Plan To Take Place In Three Phases
Local

The regeneration of Għar Lapsi will be carried out in three phases, Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli has said in a parliamentary reply, outlining the works planned to improve the popular coastal site and enhance public safety.

The first phase includes repairs to the existing slipway, the construction of a new staircase providing access to the bay, and the rebuilding of a jetty for swimmers.

According to the Minister, Public Works Department employees are already carrying out the works, with the final layer of concrete currently being laid on the slipway while the new staircase is under construction.

The second phase will focus on the reconstruction of the landing stage at the nearby bay known as Għar Miżun. Large boulders, sourced from the same bay, will also be positioned to protect the structure from wave action.

Minister Zerafa Civelli said work on this phase is expected to begin in mid-July and will take around 34 weeks to complete.

The final phase will address the stabilisation of the cliff after a significant section collapsed during and following Storm Harry.

The Minister explained that the Public Works Department is working with geotechnical consultants to prepare the necessary technical plans and interventions to secure the cliff and improve safety for visitors.

Once these plans are finalised, the procurement process for the works will begin.

The Minister also tabled in Parliament the plans relating to the first and second phases of the regeneration project.
