This year, the Ghajnsielem Christmas tree has grown to 20 metres high and 8 metres wide, incorporating around 5,000 bottles.

The metal frame alone weighs 3.5 tonnes and was constructed using 5,000 washers, 420 bolts and 420 nuts, along with over 30kg of welding rods and approximately 100 metres of steel wire.

Two decorative arms were added at the entrance, forming a new archway made with bottles, while two lanterns hang on either side of the square entrance. In total, more than 7,000 bottles are used across the tree and its features.

A surrounding garden has been created with six areas planted with real grass, and sixteen messages from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si about the environment are displayed.

Franco Ciangura led the creative process, supported by Joseph Ciantar and other volunteers. Their efforts have produced attractions that have gained recognition beyond Malta.

In 2021, the tree was named the most beautiful Christmas tree in Europe.

The project continues to receive support from the Ghajnsielem Local Council, the Ministry for Gozo, the Directorate for Culture in Gozo, Visit Malta, and other central government entities.

Special thanks were also given to the parish, which allowed the tree to be installed in the village square, making it a central feature of the community’s festive celebrations.
