The Għajn Dwieli tunnel leading into Cospicua (Bormla) was closed to traffic on Thursday afternoon after rocks fell beneath the underpass as a result of adverse weather conditions.

Transport Malta announced the closure in a social media post issued at around 1.30pm, urging motorists to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes. Drivers heading towards Bormla have been advised to access the locality from the direction of Fgura instead.

A police spokesperson confirmed that no vehicles were struck by the falling rocks and that no injuries were reported. The Government’s architect has been informed of the incident and was dispatched to the site to assess the situation and determine the necessary remedial works.

The Cospicua Local Council also issued a public notice, stating that the area has been temporarily closed for safety reasons. Both the council and Transport Malta appealed for the public’s cooperation, asking motorists and pedestrians to stay clear of the tunnel until the site is deemed safe and reopened.

The Għajn Dwieli tunnel, which is approximately 110 metres long, is a key access route from Paola into the Cottonera area. It was last closed in September for four days to carry out restoration works. In 2021, Infrastructure Malta completed a €2.2 million restoration project on the tunnel, reinforcing its structural integrity and upgrading facilities such as lighting.

Authorities have not yet indicated when the tunnel is expected to reopen.
