A fundraiser has been launched to help repatriate the body of 21-year-old Italian national Maichol Di Nunzio, who died following a scooter accident in Pembroke.

Di Nunzio, originally from Primavalle in Rome, was critically injured when his scooter collided with a concrete barrier along Triq Sant’ Andrija on the morning of 14 August.

He was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remained in critical condition for two days before succumbing to his injuries.

Raised from the age of nine in a community home alongside his sister Aurora, Di Nunzio was known in his community for his kindness and positive outlook.

He had worked with the civil service at Opera Don Calabria and was also employed at a local bar. Friends and acquaintances described him as “a cheerful young man full of life” who managed to remain optimistic despite early challenges.

The GoFundMe campaign, which has so far raised more than €20,000, was set up to support Aurora in covering the costs of repatriation.

Organisers said the siblings had always supported one another and appealed for further contributions to ease the financial burden she now faces.
