Several Local Councils will receive additional funds through the Local Government Division scheme for the maintenance and support of major infrastructure projects carried out by the Central Government in their respective localities.

This was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with the Director General of the Local Government Division, Emile Vassallo.

They explained that the scheme is part of a number of initiatives providing extra funding to Local Councils, enabling them to carry out the necessary maintenance to safeguard their communities.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said the scheme was created after projects completed over the years had begun to deteriorate because Councils lacked the funds to carry out regular maintenance.

She stated, “Through this initiative we are being proactive to ensure that investments made are preserved and completed projects are not left to decay. Nobody wants the value of these investments to be lost. This also aligns with the Local Councils’ path towards Vision Malta 2050.”

She added that maintaining public spaces, particularly gardens, recreational centres, playgrounds, and other facilities, is important not only for beautification but also for the safety of residents.

Director General Emile Vassallo said that now in its seventh year, the scheme will once again allow several Local Councils to benefit from these funds.

“This ensures that major projects completed in the past continue to be preserved and kept in the best condition. The maintenance investment will total around a quarter of a million euros,” he added.

Selected projects include maintenance of culverts, planting of new trees, installation of benches, open spaces for physical activity, children’s playgrounds, and street lighting. Localities benefiting include Mosta, Birkirkara, Ħal Għargħur, Ħal Lija, Gudja, Marsaxlokk, Paola, Imqabba, Nadur, Xagħra, and Żebbuġ in Gozo.
