Fun Facts You Might Not Know About Naxxar

Perched on the higher ground of Malta’s northern region, Naxxar is a town rich in history, architecture, and cultural identity. From prehistoric landmarks to elegant palaces, Naxxar has long played an important role in Malta’s story. Here are some of the most interesting facts you might not know about this remarkable town.
A Name with Historical Depth
The name Naxxar is thought to have several possible origins:
It may derive from the Maltese verb naxar, meaning “to saw” or “to cut”, possibly linked to the work of local stonemasons.
Another theory suggests it comes from Nazarene or nazar, indicating a population that was among the first to adopt Christianity in Malta.
This is reflected in the town’s Latin motto: “Prior Credidi”, which means “First to Believe.”
Signs of Prehistoric Life
Naxxar is one of Malta’s oldest inhabited areas. Archaeological remains such as cart ruts carved into the rock, punic tombs and ancient catacombs which all point to human activity in the area that dates back thousands of years. These clues make Naxxar an important site for historians and archaeologists alike.
A Town Built for Defence
Due to its elevated position, Naxxar was strategically important for defending the island:
The Gauci Tower, built before 1548, served as a fortified noble residence.
Saint Mark’s Tower, Naxxar Entrenchment, and the Hompesch Hunting Lodge were part of a broader network of fortifications.
These structures were designed to protect the interior from coastal attacks during the rule of the Knights of St John.
Palazzo Parisio: A Jewel of Naxxar
At the heart of the town lies Palazzo Parisio, a 20th-century palace originally built as a hunting lodge for the Parisio Muscati family. Today, it is admired for its:
Art Nouveau façade
Sicilian Baroque interiors
Well-maintained formal gardens
The building is a rare architectural treasure in Malta and remains open to the public for tours and events.
