Fun Facts You Didn’t Know About: Swieqi!

Ready to discover Swieqi, a cosy and friendly town in Malta that’s full of hidden valleys, old forts and even its very own football team?
A Town That Grew Up Fast
Swieqi may feel modern now, but the name actually comes from the Maltese word for water flow channels because it was built over a valley where water once ran through.
It only started growing in the 1980s, with lots of terraced houses and villas popping up. Then in the 2000s, many were replaced by apartments and maisonettes.
Between Valleys and Big Views
You can take a lovely walk along the old valley trails from Spinola Bay to Madliena. Stunning villas line the lanes, and the route climbs toward the historic Victoria Lines, a series of forts guarding the Great Fault.
Forts on the Hill
Over in Madliena, part of Swieqi, you’ll find Fort Madliena. Built around 1880 as part of the Victoria Lines, this old fort had a special revolving bridge instead of a drawbridge, cool, right?
A Town Full of Neighbours
Swieqi is one of the busier places to live now, with lots of people moving in. In 2023, around 14,794 people lived there. It’s quiet and safe, but just a hop and a skip away from buzzing spots like Sliema, St Julian’s and Paceville.
Goals, Goals, Goals!
Swieqi has its own football club, Swieqi United FC. They play in Malta’s First Division and are known as “Swieqi’s Pride”, cheered on by locals and fans all around the island!
