Fuel Stations Busier as More Drivers Rely on Air Conditioning During Heatwave

As Malta continues to experience soaring summer temperatures, drivers are increasingly relying on their vehicles' air conditioning systems, leading to higher fuel consumption and more frequent visits to petrol stations across the islands.

With temperatures inside parked vehicles capable of exceeding 50°C under the summer sun, many motorists say using air conditioning has become a necessity rather than a luxury. Experts warn that cabin temperatures can rise rapidly, making it uncomfortable, and in some cases dangerous, to drive without cooling.

Speaking to Malta Daily, several fuel pump operators said they have noticed a rise in the number of motorists stopping to refill their tanks, with many attributing the increase to the heavier use of air conditioning.

"We've definitely been busier over the past days and weeks," one fuel station operator said. "People are coming in to refuel more often because they're keeping their air conditioning running, especially during the hottest parts of the day."

Vehicle experts explain that an air conditioning system places an additional load on a car's engine. Depending on the vehicle, outside temperature, and driving conditions, using the air conditioner can increase fuel consumption by around 5% to 20%, particularly in slow-moving traffic where engines are idling for longer periods.

While modern vehicles have become more fuel-efficient, experts recommend using the air conditioning wisely to help reduce consumption. Parking in shaded areas, using a windshield sunshade, ventilating the vehicle before driving, and ensuring the air conditioning system is properly maintained can all improve efficiency and reduce the strain on the engine.
