The Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) joined the international community in marking World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with a conference aimed at raising awareness and addressing the evolving challenges of human trafficking.

The event formed part of FSWS’s ‘New Beginnings: Empowering Against Trafficking’ project, co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF).

The initiative seeks to support trafficking victims in Malta by providing shelter, psychosocial support, legal aid, and assistance in rebuilding their lives with dignity.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Michael Falzon, highlighted that trafficking disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including women facing domestic violence, unaccompanied migrants, those with mental health challenges, and individuals experiencing poverty or social exclusion.

Minister for EU Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi stressed the need to strategically use EU funds to support the most vulnerable. He praised FSWS and partners for giving victims hope and a fresh start.

Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality Rebecca Buttigieg pointed to the government’s recent national strategy and awareness campaign: Human Trafficking Hides in Plain Sight, urging the public to report suspicious activity.

FSWS CEO Alfred Grixti said the project also focuses on early identification, integration, training for professionals, and public education on recognising trafficking indicators. The public is encouraged to report concerns via the 24/7 helpline at 179.
