Friends Of The Earth Slam Budget 2027 Over ‘Apartheid-Like’ Treatment Of TCNs

Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) says the Government has taken a colonialist, apartheid-like approach to third-country nationals in the 2027 Budget.
In their statement, the environmental NGO said the budget failed to adequately address climate change, renewable energy and Malta’s environmental challenges, while introducing measures that unfairly target foreign workers.
FoEM welcomed the increase in eco-taxes on tourists visiting Comino and leisure yachts, but asked for clarity on how the profits from these measures would be spent.
They raised concerns over the several new charges affecting third-country nationals, arguing these measures would not solve traffic congestion or economic problems. Instead, they propose investing in cycling infrastructure and public transport.
They believe that the new measures, including an €83 per month driving license fee and new public transport fees, risk deepening inequality while neglecting Malta’s environmental and social needs.
