Free TraTra 2026 Summer School To Introduce Youth To Translation

TraTra 2026 is a free four day summer school designed to introduce young people to the world of translation through practical workshops, expert guidance and hands on experience.
Organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) in Malta, the programme will take place from 14 to 17 July 2026 at Europe House in Valletta.
The course is open to young people born between 2006 and 2009 who have a strong command of both Maltese and English and an interest in languages, whether or not they study them formally.
It is aimed at those who would like to explore translation as a possible academic or professional pathway while developing valuable language and communication skills.
Each day begins with a presentation by an experienced professional translator covering different areas of translation, including general translation, literary prose, poetry and audiovisual translation.
Participants will then take part in practical exercises focusing on translation techniques before working independently on their own translation projects with guidance and feedback from tutors.
The course will be conducted primarily in Maltese, with translations produced into Maltese.
The organisers describe translation as an essential skill in today's interconnected world, supporting international communication, business, travel and access to information. They also highlight its wider benefits, including improving reading, writing and critical thinking skills that are valuable in higher education and future careers.
TraTra takes its name from the first three letters of the Maltese and English words for translation, reflecting the bilingual nature of the programme. The initiative forms part of activities linked to the European Day of Languages, celebrating Europe's rich linguistic diversity.
Participation is free of charge, although places are limited and applications must be submitted in advance. The programme will be held at Europe House on St Paul's Street in Valletta, within easy walking distance of the main bus terminus and the Gozo Fast Ferry terminal.
