Free Insulin Pump Service For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes

Three new services for people living with Type 1 diabetes have been launched, including the free provision of insulin pumps, the opening of a multidisciplinary insulin pump clinic, and the establishment of a 24/7 contact centre offering specialist support.
Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, announced that an investment of €1.4 million will see the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump provided free of charge.
The device works in combination with Continuous Glucose Monitors already supplied to patients, delivering insulin automatically and continuously to support improved glucose control.

A dedicated multidisciplinary insulin pump clinic has also been launched at the Ċensu Moran Centre.
The clinic is supported by a newly formed team of trained healthcare professionals and will provide specialised follow up, education and clinical support to patients using insulin pump technology.
In addition, a 24/7 contact centre has been set up to provide advice and technical assistance related to insulin pumps and associated equipment, ensuring continuous support for patients and their families.
The Minister confirmed that the service is currently being offered to patients aged 18 and under, as well as to patients who develop diabetes following total pancreatectomy surgery.
The service will be extended in the coming months to include all patients with Type 1 diabetes. A similar service will also be launched shortly at Gozo General Hospital for Gozitan patients.
“Today we have delivered another promise. Today’s investment not only improves quality of life and prevents serious complications, but also provides peace of mind for parents,” concluded Jo Etienne Abela.
