Former minister Franco Mercieca has welcomed Prime Minister Robert Abela’s invitation to contest the upcoming general election, making the announcement during Labour’s first mass rally in Żejtun.

Addressing the crowd, Mercieca confirmed he will be returning to the political arena, accepting the party’s call to once again place his name before voters ahead of the May 30 election.

Mercieca, an ophthalmic surgeon by profession, served as Minister for Health between 2013 and 2017 under a Labour administration, before stepping away from frontline politics. During his tenure, he was involved in key healthcare reforms and remained a respected figure within the party.

He had previously contested general elections with the Labour Party and was elected to Parliament, contributing to the party’s strong electoral performances during that period.

His return was met with applause from the thousands of supporters gathered in Żejtun square, where Labour officially kicked off its campaign just a day after the election was called.

Mercieca’s re-entry adds another familiar face to Labour’s electoral lineup, as the party builds momentum heading into the national vote.
