A Syrian national who was convicted of a homicide in Malta has been deported following the completion of his prison sentence, the Ministry for Home Affairs has confirmed.

The 43-year-old man was returned to Syria in a repatriation operation carried out by the Immigration Police in recent hours. The man had been living in Malta since 2003.

The individual had been convicted in connection with a homicide that took place in 2007 in Selmun, within the limits of Mellieħa. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to the murder of another man and to causing extensive damage to the victim’s vehicle, receiving an effective prison sentence.

After completing his sentence, the man remained in custody at a detention centre run by the Detention Services Agency while the authorities finalised the necessary procedures for his deportation.

The process was completed after the International Protection Agency rejected two separate requests for international protection submitted by the man.

Byron Camilleri, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, said the deportation of individuals who commit serious crimes is a matter of significant public interest.

He stated that society has a clear interest in ensuring that individuals who pose a threat to the peace and security of communities are removed from the country once they have served their prison sentence.
