Food Safety Authority Seizes Van Carrying Non-Compliant Food Shipment from Sicily
Local

The Food Safety and Security Authority (FSSA) has intercepted a consignment of food products found to be in breach of local food safety regulations after a van entering Malta was inspected upon arrival.

The vehicle, which travelled from Albania and transited through Sicily before reaching Malta via ferry, was flagged to authorities by the Tax and Customs Administration. Following the alert, FSSA officials carried out an inspection of the van and its contents.

The inspection revealed a range of food items—including meat, dairy products, snacks, olive oil, soft drinks, and other packaged goods—that were deemed non-compliant. Authorities cited improper storage temperatures, missing labelling, and a lack of required traceability documentation.

In line with procedures, the affected products were immediately sealed and are set to be destroyed to protect public health and ensure compliance with food safety standards.

The FSSA also noted that it had not been informed of the shipment in advance, as required by law. Regulations stipulate that traders must register with the Authority and provide at least 48 hours’ notice before importing animals, food, feed, or plants into Malta, including consignments originating within the EU.

The Authority stated it will continue to enforce food safety rules rigorously and take action against non-compliant operators, while thanking the Tax and Customs Administration for its cooperation in the operation.
