Fondazzjoni Dar Il-Hena: 10 Years Of Providing Shelter For The Vulnerable
Fondazzjoni Dar il-Hena is celebrating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of providing shelter, meals and support services to people facing financial hardship, social difficulties and addiction-related challenges.
The foundation’s work has been built on years of commitment, determination, and social, emotional and financial assistance, with services operating around the clock to support some of society’s most vulnerable members.
The journey began through a collaboration between the Government, the Alfred Mizzi Foundation and Caritas Malta, with the partnership continuing to grow over the years through the expansion and strengthening of services.
The anniversary was commemorated on Wednesday morning in the presence of Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon, representatives from Caritas Malta and the Alfred Mizzi Foundation, among others.
During the event, it was explained that the partnership initially developed through a social agreement with the Ministry for the Family. In 2020, a dedicated fund was established to support the operation of Fondazzjoni Dar il-Hena, amounting to €795,000. This year, Government funding increased to €1 million, representing a 26% rise.
Minister Falzon said that despite the support provided through various initiatives, there will always be individuals who remain at the margins of society. He stressed the importance of protecting those at risk of falling outside the social safety net.
“Today, we are discussing the realities faced by a small number of individuals who need support, not only financially but also socially, until they regain their stability. Everyone has the right to live a quality life. This Government will not leave anyone behind,” he said.
Caritas Malta Director Anthony Gatt highlighted the importance of cooperation between the organisations involved, noting that Dar il-Hena’s centres provide unique emergency assistance services.
He recalled the story of a woman who had experienced a difficult childhood and various social challenges, who told him that she had never eaten food as good as that prepared at Dar Papa Franġisku.
Gatt thanked the staff and all organisations working alongside the foundation for their dedication, while Alfred Mizzi Foundation Chairperson Julian Sammut said the initiative grew from a desire to create a soup kitchen that could reach people most in need.
He added that after ten years, the partnership continues through the services offered by Dar Papa Franġisku, Dar Maria Dolores and Reach. He also paid tribute to Charles Miceli, saying his contribution to the sector continues to be remembered.
