Speaking to Malta Daily, Fleur Abela said she is proud to be representing the LGBTIQ+ community in Parliament, describing her election as an important milestone for diversity and inclusion in Maltese politics.

Fleur Abela was elected to Parliament today through the Gender Corrective Mechanism, becoming the first female openly LGBTIQ+ representative to sit in Malta's Parliament.

Abela has emerged as one of Labour's rising political figures in recent years. In late 2025, she was appointed Animal Welfare Commissioner and subsequently announced her intention to contest the general election as a Labour Party candidate on the First District.

The newly elected MP is also the daughter of lawyer and former Labour Party Deputy Leader Toni Abela, who served in senior roles within the party and has long been involved in Maltese public life.

With her election, Abela joins Parliament as part of a new generation of Labour representatives, bringing with her experience in animal welfare, civil rights advocacy and public service.

“I am proud to be representing the LGBTIQ+ community in Parliament,” Abela told Malta Daily following her election.
