POLICE ARREST FIVE IN ALLEGED ORGANISED DRUG TRAFFICKING CASE

Five Maltese nationals, four men and one woman, have been arrested following an intensive investigation into an alleged organised drug trafficking group.
The arrests were carried out on Wednesday during simultaneous searches at four different properties in Ħal Għaxaq, Birgu and Żabbar.
Three people were arrested during a raid at a residence in Ħal Għaxaq, where police allegedly found them packing different types of drugs. Officers seized around 140 packets containing a substance suspected to be synthetic cannabis, around 30 packets of suspected cocaine and three additional packets of suspected cannabis.
Police also confiscated a large quantity of luxury clothing and electronic items, jewellery and approximately €2,000 in cash from the residence.
Four vehicles were also seized during the investigation, including a BMW 850i, Range Rover Sport, Peugeot van and Opel.
Two further arrests were made after two individuals allegedly went to a garage in Żabbar in an attempt to remove the BMW and prevent it from being seized by police.
The five suspects are expected to be arraigned in court today at around noon before Magistrate Dr Jean Paul Grech LL.D.
A magisterial inquiry into the case has also been opened and is being led by Magistrate Dr Renata Farrugia LL.D.
The investigation remains ongoing.
