A team of local fishermen has set a new national record after landing the largest documented Wreckfish ever caught on a fishing rod in Maltese waters.

The achievement was recently recognised by The Malta Records, which confirmed that the fish, a Wreckfish weighed an impressive 50.8 kilogrammes.

Known locally as the “Ħanżir tal-Fond,” the species is a deep-water fish that can grow to remarkable sizes and is considered a prized catch among anglers.

The new record was established by Team Enigma X, made up of Josef Cassar, Clifford Zammit and Etienne Camilleri.

The record-breaking fish was caught aboard a Tuccoli 250VM on the 30th of May 2026.

The Malta Records announced the achievement during a visit to Go Fish Ħamrun, a popular fishing equipment store that hosted the organisation and provided an opportunity for enthusiasts to learn more about the record.

The catch marks a significant milestone for Malta’s recreational fishing community, showcasing the skill, patience and dedication required to land one of the Mediterranean’s most sought-after deep-sea species.
