First Inter-Connector Successfully Re-Energised & Returned To Full Operations

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli has thanked workers following the successful return to full operation of the first interconnector (IC1), after a coordinated shutdown linked to ongoing works on the second interconnector (IC2).
IC1 has now been safely re-energised after essential technical interventions at the Ragusa Terminal Station in Sicily. These works mark an important milestone in the development of IC2 and were carried out while maintaining full national electricity stability.
Dalli praised the efforts of teams from Enemalta plc and Interconnect Malta, as well as Terna Energy Solutions and the Italian Transmission System Operator, who coordinated closely throughout the process.
She emphasised that maintaining stability during such complex operations remains a top priority, noting that the project was completed within the established timeframe while ensuring safety and system reliability.
The planned intervention required the temporary suspension of IC1 to allow for the safe rerouting of control cables. This work is necessary to prepare for the installation of a new 220kV hybrid switchgear, which will support the integration of IC2.
The new infrastructure will also strengthen the resilience of both interconnectors.
During the two day operation, Enemalta ensured that the national grid remained stable and secure.
Projects such as IC2, co-financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund, play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and supporting the expansion of renewable energy.
