First Heatwave Of The Year Hitting This Weekend!
Local

The Maltese Islands are set to experience the hottest weekend of the year so far, with a red weather warning issued as temperatures are expected to rise above 40°C or even reach 41°C between Saturday 18 July and Tuesday 21 July.

The highest temperature recorded in Malta so far this year was registered at 38.1°C, but this is expected to be surpassed as the heatwave intensifies.

Maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 38°C and 40°C during the coming days, while overnight temperatures are expected to remain high, dropping only to around 26°C to 28°C.

The current temperatures are significantly above the seasonal average for this time of year.

The average maximum temperature for July is 31.7°C, while the average minimum is 22.1°C. Sea temperatures have also risen, currently standing at around 28°C, which is approximately 3°C warmer than what is normally expected during this period.

The heatwave is being driven by a high-pressure system extending from North Africa across the central Mediterranean. This system is positioned between two cooler low-pressure areas, creating a weather pattern known as an Omega Block due to its resemblance to the Greek letter Ω on weather charts.

Because this system moves slowly, the hot and dry conditions are expected to persist across the central Mediterranean, including Malta, over the coming days.

Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions during peak heat hours and remain updated with official weather warnings.
