Today saw the organisation of the first conference in the EduVoices series, under the theme of strategic perspective. This edition focused on Early Leaving from Education and Training (ELET). Next week, a series of consultation meetings will take place, aimed at transforming the national curriculum. Both events represent another significant step in the ongoing transformation of Malta’s education sector.

“The conference today is important because it marks the beginning of a series of conferences and workshops that literally place the individual at the centre of all sectors. We believe that everyone’s voice matters in the education sector, hence the title EduVoices for this series, because throughout these events we will listen to everyone who has a contribution to make,” said the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, at the opening of the conference.

The EduVoices conference was organised by the Directorate for Planning and Strategic Foresight (DPSF) in collaboration with OECD-CERI. At present, a research project on the future of learning is underway, with the results set to be published for the first time in 2026.

“It was also announced that on Monday we will take a very important step for this sector the start of a series of consultations aimed at transforming the curriculum, aligned with Malta’s National Education Strategy 2024–2030. This will lead to a reform process designed to develop a vision that will form the foundation of the Curriculum Redesign and Implementation Document,” explained Minister Grima.

The curriculum consultation meetings are being conducted by the Department for Curriculum, Lifelong Learning and Employability in collaboration with the OECD Education Directorate.

Minister Grima emphasised that the EduVoices conferences and workshops are not simply another initiative; they focus on dialogue, listening, and action. They provide a space for students, educators, families, and communities to share their experiences, ideas, and thoughts on the future of education in Malta. In recent weeks, a national survey was also carried out among teachers, students, and parents.

During today’s conference, attention was given to ensuring that no child is left behind and that every student has the opportunity to succeed. This is crucial because education is not just about exam results; it also opens doors to employment, fosters confidence, promotes active citizenship, encourages personal growth, and upholds dignity. Education is the nation’s passport to the future.

“I am proud to say that Malta is making real progress. Our ELET rate is at its lowest ever. However, this is not just a statistic; it reflects the hard work and commitment of schools, educators, parents, young people, and all stakeholders. It shows that investment in education is yielding tangible results,” said Minister Grima.

Minister Grima concluded by stating that the Ministry remains committed to continuing work in two priority areas: support for wellbeing, which is essential for learning, and literacy – the foundation upon which all learning is built.
