First Day Centre For Older Persons With Disabilities Set To Open Soon

Work on Malta's first Day Centre dedicated specifically to older persons with disabilities is progressing steadily, with around half of the project now completed.
The new facility, located in Gżira, is being developed through an investment of €250,000 and is expected to welcome its first service users by the end of October.
The announcement was made by Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia during a site visit attended by Permanent Secretary Stephanie Rocco and officials from Aġenzija Sapport.
The Minister highlighted the importance of providing specialised support for older persons with disabilities, particularly those who are already making use of day services offered by the agency.
Once operational, the centre will cater for up to 35 older persons and will provide a range of specialised services designed around their specific needs.
In addition to tailored programmes, the facility will also offer meals and transport, helping to ensure accessibility and convenience for those attending.
Minister Farrugia explained that the project forms part of a commitment announced in the 2026 Budget. She said the Government is delivering on its promise to create a specialised service that responds directly to the needs of an ageing population of persons with disabilities.
Preparatory work has also included an assessment of the needs of older persons currently attending other centres. This process has helped guide the development of programmes that are more suitable and relevant to their circumstances, ensuring a person-centred approach.
Accessibility has been a key consideration throughout the refurbishment of the building. The property has been extensively adapted to provide a safe, modern and inclusive environment for future attendees.
Aġenzija Sapport Chief Executive Officer Oliver Scicluna described the initiative as another important step in expanding specialised services. He said the centre will provide individualised support in a modern and accessible setting.
The Gżira facility will be the agency's 14th day centre and the first dedicated exclusively to older persons with disabilities, marking a significant development in the sector.
