Yesterday, the first community meeting was held as part of a wide public consultation on social media reform. The meeting confirmed the need for improved regulation of social media in order to protect children and vulnerable individuals.

Chaired by the Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Rebecca Buttigieg, the meeting brought together parents, young people, older citizens, social sector workers, broadcasters, academics, NGOs and professionals. Participants shared their views in the presence of members of the technical committee overseeing the consultation process.

Key topics included how some children are accessing social media without supervision, the need for greater awareness among parents, and the influence of algorithms on user behaviour. Suggestions were made that the reform should be implemented with caution. Others stressed the role of the education system in preparing children from an early age to use social media responsibly.

Participants also raised concerns about bullying on social media and emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of children must take priority. The discussion highlighted the importance of children leading active lives, including participation in sports and extracurricular activities, while reducing time spent online.

Parliamentary Secretary Buttigieg explained that this meeting is part of a series of discussions with stakeholders and experts linked to the Government’s Green Paper for public consultation. She said that while Malta is following reforms being developed in several countries, including the European Union, local input is essential to ensure the measures reflect Maltese realities.

The appointed committee will collect all feedback and prepare a report with recommendations for social media reform. Buttigieg noted that the reform affects everyone and that while social media has negative aspects, it also has positive elements. She thanked participants and encouraged ongoing contributions, emphasising that the aim is to protect children and vulnerable individuals without restricting freedom of expression.

The next meeting will be held on 4 February at Pjazza 1902 in Pembroke. Written submissions can be made via www.publicconsultation.gov.mt.
