First Aid For The Mind: Why Mental Health First Aid Matters

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid, and is now free, having been subsidised by the government.

It is the initial support given to someone who may be developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening condition, or going through a crisis, until professional help is available or the situation improves.

The Ministry for Health and Active Aging in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government has launched a nationwide project to equip individuals with Mental Health First Aid through all local councils in Malta and Gozo.

The MHFA course is a structured, evidence based programme delivered over 12 hours across four sessions.

It equips people with the practical skills, confidence and understanding needed to support friends, family members, colleagues or loved ones during difficult times.

Participants learn how to recognise signs of common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use problems, as well as how to respond to serious situations including suicidal thoughts, panic attacks and acute distress.

The course also highlights the importance of early intervention, recovery and self care for those offering support, helping people act without fear of saying the wrong thing.

MHFA is just as important as physical first aid because mental health crises are just as real and potentially life threatening.

Mental Health First Aid helps close that gap, reducing stigma, strengthening relationships and enabling communities, workplaces and families to respond with empathy, confidence and care when it matters most.
