Fight Breaks Out In Armenia’s Parliament Over ‘Ministry Of Sex’

What started as a political debate quickly turned into a physical fight inside Armenia’s parliament, with MPs throwing punches, kicks and even chairs at one another.
The incident took place on Thursday, 29th October, during a parliamentary session involving members of the ruling Civil Contract party and the opposition Strong Armenia party.
Tensions escalated when government MP Taron Chakhoyan accused opposition figures of corruption and brought up controversial remarks previously made by a relative of opposition leader Narek Karapetyan.
The remarks concerned the idea of establishing a so-called "Ministry of Sex", which had been discussed earlier this year, supposedly to ensure that women in Armenia were sexually satisfied. The idea emerged during a podcast discussion rather than through a formal government proposal.
Chakhoyan demanded an apology for the comments, prompting an angry exchange with Karapetyan.
Within moments, MPs began pushing, punching and kicking each other, while footage showed chairs being thrown across the chamber.
One opposition MP was left with a bleeding nose, while another reportedly had his clothes torn during the confrontation. An ambulance was also called to parliament.
Parliament Speaker Ruben Rubinyan initially refused to interrupt the session, insisting that the public should be able to witness what was happening.
However, as the situation escalated, proceedings were eventually suspended and security officers intervened.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan subsequently defended the actions of members of his ruling party, while opposition representatives also defended their involvement in the confrontation.
The incident, captured on camera and broadcast live, has attracted international attention.
