Work has begun on the Fgura District Park, transforming nearly 50,000 square metres of previously abandoned land into one of the largest green spaces in southern Malta. The park will extend from Fgura’s football ground to San Klement Park in Żabbar, creating a seamless, accessible area for residents.

During a site visit, Minister for the Environment and European Funds, Miriam Dalli, said, “In the coming months, we will see a complete transformation, as abandoned land in the heart of Fgura is brought back to life. For years, Fgura has suffered from air pollution, and this project demonstrates our commitment to provide green spaces within a 10-minute walk. The District Park will benefit around 11,000 residents and will be connected to San Klement Park in Żabbar.”

Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted how the project is a clear example of European and national funds being used for sustainable community investment. He said, “Through this open space, families will enjoy an accessible and safe environment for leisure, while also increasing the locality’s ecological value. As a government, we are committed to ensuring every town and city has quality spaces for relaxation, social activities, and environmental preservation for future generations.”

The abandoned area, previously neglected and unsafe, is now being revitalised with an investment of approximately €4.2 million. The project will include areas for physical activity, pedestrian zones, cycling access, and facilities for people with mobility challenges. Over 350 new trees will be planted, supported by two new reservoirs and water management systems.

Project Manager Andrea Saliba stated, “We consulted local residents to ensure the project meets the community’s needs. Fgura will soon have open spaces for children to play safely, areas for picnics, and spots for the elderly to socialise.”

Mayor Clayton Cascun Portelli added, “Progress on the District Park is advancing well. Every day we are closer to realising our vision of a green, safe, and beautiful space for all families.”
