Festa Ħut To Celebrate Malta’s Fishing Sector In Marsaxlokk

The details of Festa Ħut have been announced by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Anton Refalo and Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti.

The event will take place at Xatt is-Sajjieda in Marsaxlokk on 20 September from 6:00pm until 11:00pm.

Festa Ħut aims to celebrate Malta’s fishing sector, recognise the contribution of local fishermen and promote greater awareness of the quality and variety of locally caught fish through an educational, gastronomic and family-friendly programme.

Minister Refalo said the event provides an opportunity to recognise the important role played by Maltese and Gozitan fishermen, describing them as a key part of the country’s maritime identity.

He said fishermen contribute significantly to the supply of fresh, local produce and that Festa Ħut will continue highlighting their work while encouraging consumers to discover the variety and quality of local fish.

A number of trophies will also be presented during the event in recognition of the dedication and efforts of local fishermen.

Minister Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the role of European funds in supporting initiatives that strengthen the fishing sector and bring local products closer to consumers. He said that the investment behind the event promotes awareness about protecting the marine environment, encourages sustainable fish consumption and supports the industry.

This year’s edition will focus on fish species that are not yet widely consumed, including Aċċol, Kubrit, Tumbrell, Sawrell and Ċinturin. Professional chefs will showcase different ways of preparing and cooking these lesser-known local species, while visitors will have the chance to taste them.

The event will also include fresh fish sales by fish hawkers, educational stands, a Kids Area, fishing activities, boat tours from Xatt is-Sajjieda, entertainment by local artists, a BBQ Area and cultural stands.

Festa Ħut is being organised with co-financing from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) as part of efforts to strengthen Malta’s fishing sector, promote local produce and encourage a more varied and sustainable consumption of fish.
