Fearne Recounts Operating On 6 Year Old Libyan Girl After She Was Hit By RPG

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs addressed a high level meeting at the United Nations in New York focused on protecting children affected by armed conflict.

During the meeting, Minister Fearne recounted how he had to operate on a 6 year old girl called Fatima from Lebanon after she was hit by a rocket propelled grenade launcher (RPG).

The girl was brought over from Libya and taken straight to the operating theatre. He spent the next two days working on Fatima, whose lungs had been, he said, ‘melted’ by the blast.

The abdomen was completely shattered, and despite the intensive care, she passed away after six days. Fearne said that this was just one girl. Last year, the United Nations registered 14,200 girls and boys who were casualties of war.

‘It is within our power to stop this. Wars are not natural disasters’, he said.’

‘They are started by men, conducted by men. They can be stopped by men and women’, he said, calling on for the signing of the Political Declaration on Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas.
