FATHER AND FIVE-YEAR-OLD SON DIE IN ĠNEJNA BAY BOAT COLLISION

A 43-year-old man and his five-year-old son from St Paul’s Bay lost their lives during the night after the small dinghy they were travelling in was reportedly struck by a boat in Ġnejna Bay.
The incident happened shortly after 1am, when police were informed that assistance was needed following a collision at sea. A boat, reportedly being operated by a 43-year-old man from Rabat, is believed to have collided with the dinghy.
Civil Protection Department officials were immediately called to the scene and launched a search operation in the area. The father and son were later found lifeless in the sea. Their bodies were recovered and taken to the mortuary.
The small dinghy sustained considerable damage, while the boat involved in the incident was also brought ashore.
Initial investigations indicate that, shortly before the collision, the father and his son had left another boat anchored offshore in Għnejna Bay and went out on the small dinghy. It was during this trip that the collision occurred.
Magistrate Dr Joe Mifsud LL.D is leading a magisterial inquiry into the incident, while police investigations remain ongoing.
