The Malta Youth in Agriculture Foundation (MaYA) has expressed solidarity with farmers and breeders affected by this morning's explosion at the Ta' Lourdes fireworks factory in Magħtab.

In a statement, the Foundation said it was relieved that, according to information available so far, no lives had been lost.

However, it stressed that the consequences of such incidents extend beyond the immediate danger posed to people.

MaYA noted that, alongside the visible damage caused to buildings and infrastructure, farming communities and animals had also been significantly affected.

The Foundation said it had been in contact with farmers and breeders in the surrounding area, who reported substantial damage to their farms, including structural damage, losses of livestock and distress suffered by animals as a result of the force of the explosions.

The organisation emphasised that, for farmers and breeders, animals represent years of dedication, daily care and emotional commitment, as well as a source of livelihood for many families. It said such losses should not be viewed solely in financial terms.

MaYA called on the relevant authorities to engage with affected farming families as soon as the area is declared safe, assess the extent of the damage and provide the necessary assistance and support.

The Foundation also thanked the emergency services and all those involved in responding to the incident, while stressing that no affected community should be overlooked, including farmers, breeders and animals whose experiences often remain unheard.
