Families Evacuated Due To Naxxar Construction Site Collapse Fears: Momentum Raises Concerns
Local

Momentum has expressed deep concern following reports of structural instability at a major construction site in Naxxar, where foundations and compacted earth reportedly shifted, raising fears among workers and residents of a possible collapse and prompting a stop-work order by the authorities.

The party said the incident highlights ongoing risks within Malta’s construction sector, which it claims continues to operate under excessive development pressures, weak enforcement, and insufficient safeguards. It warned that these conditions are putting residents, workers, and entire communities at risk.

Momentum stressed that public safety must always take priority over development activity. It stated that no resident should be placed in a situation where nearby excavation works could endanger their home, property, or personal safety.

The party is calling for a full and independent investigation into the Naxxar incident, alongside the immediate publication of inspection reports, risk assessments, and enforcement actions linked to the site. It is also urging stronger accountability for developers, contractors, architects, and regulators.

Additional proposals include mandatory geological and structural assessments for major excavation projects before permits are granted, as well as wider reform of Malta’s planning and construction enforcement system.

Momentum leader and candidate on the 9th and 10th districts said incidents of this kind reflect a broader pattern linked to overdevelopment and urged a shift towards a planning model focused on safety, sustainability, and quality of life.
