All cab hailing apps operating in Malta are officially obligated to be integrated directly into Transport Malta’s systems.

This was announced by Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett, who explained that the apps themselves also have a responsibility towards Maltese roads, those using the cabs and drivers themselves.

The Minister detailed how through these new laws, the app will no longer merely be a middle-man.

It has to provide live data to Transport Malta, whilst also proving through facial recognition, that the driver booked for the ride is in fact the person that booked the job.

The driver would need to use the facial recognition at least once every three hours to ensure that the driver is the same one. The apps will also be making sure that drivers will not be able to go over 12 hours of driving in 24 hour periods, which was already announced earlier this month.

Self-employed drivers, who have four or less vehicles registered, will also be able to confirm the price and the destination beforehand by law.

The pay-per-use principle will also coming into effect, which, the Minister explains, will see the apps paying a tariff according to the amount of trips done through them.
