Animal rights activist and ultra-endurance athlete Fabio Spiteri was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika on Saturday morning in recognition of his outstanding contribution to animal welfare in Malta.

The honour was conferred during the Republic Day investiture ceremony held at the President’s Palace in Valletta, following the traditional Republic Day parade in Palace Square. The medal was presented by President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono on behalf of the Maltese people.

Spiteri is widely recognised for his tireless advocacy for shelter animals and his innovative use of sport to raise awareness about animal welfare. Over the years, he has completed numerous marathons and long-distance endurance challenges to raise funds for animal sanctuaries and rescue organisations, drawing public attention to the plight of abandoned and mistreated animals across the islands.

Through his initiatives, Spiteri has helped generate significant financial support for shelters while also encouraging greater public engagement with animal rights issues. His efforts have inspired many to contribute time, resources and support towards improving standards of animal care in Malta.

Spiteri was among several individuals honoured with the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika, an award presented to citizens who have rendered exceptional service to the nation. The honours are granted following recommendations by the Nominations Committee under the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika Act and on the advice of the Prime Minister.

The annual Republic Day ceremony recognises Maltese citizens who distinguish themselves through dedication, service and commitment to the common good.
