Explore Celebrates 10 Years Of Curiosity, Science & Innovation
The Esplora Interactive Science Centre has marked its 10th anniversary with an official ceremony at Villa Bighi, celebrating a decade of promoting science, education and public engagement across Malta.
The event, held on 1 September, brought together representatives from Government, Malta Enterprise, current and former Esplora employees, educators, researchers, partners and collaborators who contributed to the development of the Centre since it first opened its doors in 2016.
Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima highlighted Esplora’s important role in supporting Malta’s ambitions in education, research, innovation and human capital development.
He said the Centre helps connect science, research and innovation with society while inspiring young people to explore opportunities in these fields.
The Minister said Malta’s future depends on ensuring that opportunities are accessible to everyone, adding that Esplora contributes towards the goals of Vision Malta 2050 by encouraging curiosity, creativity and participation in scientific fields.
During its first decade, Esplora established itself as Malta’s national interactive science centre, engaging children, schools, educators and families through activities designed to make science more accessible and appealing.
As it enters its second decade, the Centre will place greater focus on STEAM, bringing together Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. This approach aims to strengthen links between scientific knowledge, creativity, design, communication, critical thinking and collaboration.
Malta Enterprise Chief Executive Silvio Scerri described Esplora as an important bridge between research and society, helping make science more relevant and accessible for people of all ages. He said the Centre plays a role in developing scientific literacy, curiosity and innovation among Malta’s communities and future generations.
Esplora Senior Director Mary Ann Cauchi said the Centre’s ambition is to further strengthen its position as Malta’s national platform for STEAM engagement by connecting science, research and creativity with communities across the Maltese Islands.
The anniversary marks a new phase for Esplora, with plans focusing on new interactive experiences, greater community involvement, accessibility, inclusion, opportunities for young researchers and stronger partnerships.
The celebrations included a short documentary highlighting Esplora’s journey since 2016, followed by a concert by Esplora Ambassador Ivan Grech and Friends. The performance held special significance as Grech had also performed at the Centre’s official opening a decade earlier.
The anniversary recognised the contribution of all those who have helped shape Esplora, including employees, educators, researchers, partners, collaborators, visitors and communities.
