Every Student With Talent For Skills Deserves Path To Reach It, Says GWU

The General Workers' Union (GWU) has reaffirmed its support for vocational education, saying students with practical and technical abilities should be given the same opportunities, recognition and quality of education as those following academic pathways.

The statement comes amid ongoing public discussion surrounding the Ministry for Education's proposal on the future of vocational education at secondary level.

The union stressed that manual, technical and practical skills are essential to both Malta's economy and society, arguing that they should not be regarded as a lesser alternative to academic achievement.

It said skilled workers play a vital role across every industry and service, with their expertise keeping the country running.

According to the GWU, students who demonstrate an aptitude for hands-on and vocational work deserve an educational pathway that allows them to develop their abilities and pursue rewarding careers. It maintained that vocational education should offer the same level of quality, dignity and future prospects as any other educational route.

Representing thousands of workers across technical and trade professions, the union said experience shows that practical skills can lead to fulfilling, respected and well-paid careers when supported by the right training and opportunities.

The GWU also called for workers, trade unions and industry representatives to be actively involved in shaping any future reforms to vocational education. It argued that changes should reflect the realities of today's labour market rather than rely on outdated approaches.

The union said it is committed to contributing to the consultation process to help ensure that students in Malta and Gozo who choose vocational education are provided with the support, resources and opportunities needed to reach their full potential.
