Event Dedicated To Celebrating Local Councils’ Role in Community Life Held At Villa Bighi

An event highlighting the work of local councils across Malta was held on Friday evening at Villa Bighi, organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government in collaboration with the Local Government Division.
The activity was structured around three themes; past, present and future, offering attendees a comprehensive look at the evolution of local governance.
An audiovisual presentation revisited the earliest forms of local councils in Malta, while an exhibition showcased recent projects and services delivered within communities.
The final segment focused on the future, with speeches by young participants Mariah Vella, 10, and Ilyas Ige Sultana, 12, who are part of a programme run by the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society.
They emphasised that local councils play a key role not only in improving the country but also in building a better world.
Addressing the event, Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said local councils remain central to community life, highlighting increased government funding and investment exceeding €21 million in recent schemes.
She stressed the importance of digitalisation, inclusion and youth participation in shaping stronger, more sustainable communities.
